Description
Risperidone Tablets 3 mg – Risperidone tablets are a second-generation antipsychotic medicine used in the treatment of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and autism spectrum disorder. It is atypical psychotic medicine. Risperidone belongs to a group of medicines called antipsychotics. Antipsychotic medicines are used to treat different types of mental health conditions.
Risperidone is also used to treat behavioural problems such as aggression, self-injury, and sudden mood changes in teenagers. It is also used in the treatment of episodes of mania or mixed episodes in adults, teenagers and older adults with bipolar disorder.
Working of Risperidone Tablets
Risperidone works by balancing the amount of dopamine and serotonin in your brain, chemicals that help regulate mood, behaviors, and thoughts. Schizophrenia and various brain-related disorders are supposed to be caused by excess levels of dopamine and serotonin activity. This results in overactivity of central mesolimbic pathways and mesocortical pathways. Risperidone helps in reducing this overactivity by incorporating dopamine and serotonin receptors.
Uses of Risperidone Tablets
Risperidone tablets are used in the treatment of the following –
- Schizophrenia
- Bipolar Disorder
- Irritability with Autism
Risperidone tablets can be taken once or twice a day with or without food. Remember to take the tablets at the same time every day. Your doctor will probably start with a low dose of risperidone and gradually increase your dose so that your body can adjust to the medication.
Side Effects of Risperidone
The most common side effects are listed below. However, side effects may vary for each individual and depend on the condition being treated and the amount of dosage consumed. It is advised to inform your healthcare professional if you observe any of these side effects.
- Movement problems, including tremors
- Restlessness
- Drowsiness or tiredness
- Dizziness
- Blurred vision
- Anxiety
- Nausea or Vomiting
- Stomach discomfort, indigestion, or upper abdominal pain
- Diarrhoea or constipation
- Excess saliva or dry mouth
- Infection or pain in the nose or throat, sore throat, or common cold symptoms
- Increased appetite

- Pain in the arms, legs, hands, or feet
Precautions of Risperidone Tablets
It is important to share information with your doctor before taking risperidone –
- If you are allergic to risperidone, paliperidone, or any other medication.
- You should not consume alcohol while taking this medicine. This will lead to more dizziness.
- In case you are pregnant or breastfeeding, inform your doctor immediately.
- If you are having surgery, specifically dental surgery, let your doctor know about it.
