Description

Atorvastatin Tablet is prescribed for the management of high cholesterol and high triglycerides.

How Atorvastatin Tablet works ?

Atorvastatin Tablet inhibits an enzyme in the liver called HMG-CoA reductase. Here’s an in-depth explanation of how it works:

  • Atorvastatin Tablet inhibits the activity of HMG-CoA reductase, a liver enzyme that participates in cholesterol production. The enzyme is important in the formation of mevalonate from HMG-CoA, an essential step in cholesterol biosynthesis.
  • Through inhibition of this enzyme, atorvastatin tablet suppresses the formation of cholesterol in the liver. This results in lowering the total concentration of cholesterol in the blood.
  • With less cholesterol produced, the cells in the liver produce more LDL receptors on their surface. These pick up LDL cholesterol particles (also known as “bad cholesterol”) and remove them from the blood.

How to use Atorvastatin Tablet ?

If available, read the Patient Information Leaflet provided with your medicine before you begin treatment and each time you receive a new supply. If you have any questions about how to take atorvastatin tablet, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

  • Take this medicine by mouth with or without food as directed by your doctor, typically once a day.
  • The dose is adjusted based on your medical condition, treatment response, age, and other medications you might be taking. Inform your doctor and pharmacist about all the products you use (including prescription and nonprescription drugs, and herbal products).
  • Do not consume grapefruit or grapefruit juice during the time you are taking this medication unless your physician or pharmacist informs you that you can safely do so. • If you also use certain other medications to reduce your cholesterol (bile acid-binding resins like cholestyramine or colestipol), take atorvastatin tablet at least 1 hour before or at least 4 hours after these medicines. These products may interact with atorvastatin tablet, stopping its full absorption.
  • Take this drug daily to benefit most from it. Take it at the same time every day. Continue taking this drug even if you feel fine. You are unlikely to feel ill if you have high cholesterol or triglycerides.
  • It is crucial to keep on taking your doctor’s guidance regarding diet and exercise.
  • It can take up to 4 weeks before you experience the full effect of this medicine
